As many of you have noticed, there havent been many blog updates for the children and parents over the last week! I was hoping you would not miss me for the week but that one week now seems to be rolling into the next as i am currently sat in the comfort of gatwick airport enjoying the delayed and cancelled signs that keep coming up on the info boards for our flights back  to Guernsey. I am sure there are many of you who are being affected by this but on the plus side, thank goodness for Cafe Nero!

Your blog updates will (fingers crossed) go back to normal by the end of the week and Ill make sure to add in a few extra snippets.

Sorry for any disappointment, trust me I would prefer to be back in the comfort of the office getting Corinne to make me some tea!

Bertie’s Nanas Cookies

Bertie has been telling us all about the delicious cookies that he makes with his Nana when he has a spare couple of hours at home. Nana was kind enough to bring us in her failsafe recipe for us all to enjoy. Now it’s time for us to get baking!

Ingredients

4oz margarine

6oz caster sugar

4oz rolled oats

6oz self-raising flour

1 dessertspoon of golden syrup

0.5 tsp. bicarbonate of soda dissolved in 1 tbsp. boiling water.

1 tsp. vanilla essence

Tube of smarties or similar

Now lets get started…

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees.

  1. Cream together the margarine, caster sugar, golden syrup and vanilla essence until it is light and fluffy.
  2. Add the rolled oats in the mixture and mix well.
  3. Add the self raising flour into the mixture and mix until it is fully combined.
  4. Add in the bicarbonate of soda and water to loosen up the mixture if stiff.
  5. Divide the mixture into 3 balls.
  6. Divide each of these balls into 6 smaller balls.
  7. Place them onto grease proof paper and flatten them out slightly.
  8. Then pop a few smarties onto the top to make them nice and colourful.
  9. Bake them in the oven for around 14 minutes or until they are nice and golden on the top.

Once they have cooled down a little they are all yours for the eating but beware, you better get in there quickly as it wont be long before they are all gone!

 

 

Monkey Puzzle @ Kings are taking part in Wear it Pink Day, on Friday 26th October.

We will be holding a cake sale with some delicious baked goods, and asking the children to come to nursery dressed in pink or as a super hero for the day.

Please help us to raise lots for this very worthy cause by dressing your children in pink or as a superhero for the day or even bring in cakes for our bake sale.

This weekend the Monkey Puzzle staff were treated to a trip to herm under the ruse of having a training session.

We all gathered in the White House hotel to talk through the new changes which are being implemented in the UK for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). We had a morning of brain storming, role playing and learning about how we can grow with this new structure.

We all left Herm feeling rather inspired and with a few extra bags than what we had come over with. Who can ever resist raiding the herm shop….?

Recently I came across a brilliant blog post where the author had made some rather funky cupcake cones for a kid’s party. I thought this would be a fun activity for the children to join in on so we adjusted the recipe a little to make it a little simpler and away we went.

All you need is a basis cake mixture, food colourings and some ice cream cones to begin with. Due to the cones narrowing at the end, we wanted to avoid the mixture going all the way down to the bottom as this would lead to the cake batter cooking quicker than the rest of the cone. To avoid this we crunched up a cone and placed some of the crumbs in the bottom to prevent the mixture going all the way down.

Ingredients.

  •  8oz self raising flour
  • 8oz butter
  • 8oz caster sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • Pinch of salt
  • Food colouring (optional)

Create the basic cake mixture by creaming together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy. Add in the eggs and mix together well. If the mixture starts to curdle, add a little flour in to glue the mixture back together. Add the vanilla essence and salt into the mixture and then add in the flour. Mix well until you have a smooth batter like mixture. To create some fun and exciting colours within your batter add a little food colouring and watch the colours transform your batter. We split our batter into three bowls and used separate colourings for each to make the cake look bright and delicious.

Now that you have your basic cake mixture you can now pour this into your ice cream cones that you have ready and waiting for you. If you have made several colours of batter, use a piping bag to alternate the colours of batter to create some interesting colour combinations.

Bake these in the oven at 180 degrees for 20 minutes or until the sponge bounces back to the touch. Allow these to cool by balancing them between the wire prongs of a cooling rack.

This is where the fun really begins as we can now decorate our cupcake ice cream cones. There are plenty of options to choose from when decorating your cones. For ours we dunked the top of our cones in melted chocolate before scattering on some sprinkles but it would look brilliant to also make up some butter icing and pipe it on to the head of the cone. You could even add some food colouring to your butter icing to make it just as bright as the cake inside; the options are endless.

Once decorated they are ready to be devoured… These definitely wont be lasting long!!!
